Crewel Work – 2-day workshop for beginners & improvers – Wednesdays 2 & 9 September 2026 (10am-4pm) York

Discover the timeless art of Crewel work in our enriching embroidery workshop. This two-day class offers a perfect blend of historical tradition and personal relaxation. Led by our expert tutor Jacqueline, the mixed-ability class welcomes beginners and experienced stitchers alike. As a result, you will find a supportive environment to build skills and confidence.

Whether it’s your first foray into Crewel work or a return to this cherished craft, Jacqueline tailors the experience to suit your needs. Beginners will explore Jacobean designs while mastering essential Crewel stitches, while returning stitchers have the opportunity to expand their technique and design repertoire.

Dating back to the 11th century and refined during the Jacobean period, Crewel work showcases exquisite motifs of leaves, flowers, animals, and more. Jacqueline, drawing from her childhood teachings and experiences with the Royal School of Needlework, shares invaluable insights and techniques, including material selection, design transfer, and stitching methods.

The workshop kit, valued at £40.00, includes premium materials such as linen twill, Appleton’s crewel wools, needles, and an embroidery ring. While all essential resources are provided, you’re welcome to bring along personal embroidery tools for added comfort.

Each participant also receives a 10% off voucher to spend online.

Access notice: there are two flights of stairs to the workroom in our medieval building at 32 Coppergate, York YO1 9NR. We sincerely apologise if this prevents anyone from attending.
