This structured bobbin lace beginners’ workshop provides a clear introduction to bobbin lace making. This is a traditional craft that is now listed on the UK Red List of Endangered Crafts. Tutor Sylvia Emecheta will teach you essential techniques that will help us keep this heritage craft alive.

In class, you will learn how to wind bobbins, work basic stitches and follow a simple pattern. Your design is built using a repeating sequence of stitches, twists, and pin placements. You will be able to complete a small sample piece in class based on an adorable design by Sylvia. She will show you how to finish your bug and leaf design ready to display proudly at home.

The session is delivered in a supportive, small-group setting with individual guidance. All materials are provided.

The class is suitable for complete beginners or those wishing to revisit the basics.

Sylvia is a lacemaking enthusiast who  is passionate about introducing bobbin lace to a wider audience. Supporting her efforts to revive this endangered heritage craft are members of the Craven Guild of Lace Makers.

The Guild is a North Yorkshire-based group, established over 25 years ago, dedicated to preserving and practicing the tradition of bobbin lacemaking. Guild members make traditional and contemporary lace as stand alone pieces and as part of mixed media art and craft works. A bobbin and pillow kit will be available to purchase after the class courtesy of the Guild for those who would like to develop their skills and continue creating ever more intricate designs.

In 2027 Sylvia will also be running a series of next step workshops at Mrs Duttons Wondrous Workshops.
