Silk ribbon embroidery is fun, easy to master and very versatile. Its three-dimensional effect is one of the most endearing qualities of this soft, tactile form of needlework. Pure silk ribbons are the only ribbons fine enough to slip through the eye of a needle and then though fabric to create delicate silk flowers. Silk ribbon embroidery uses a few stitching techniques that are unique but do not let this put you off as they are very easy to learn.
Some of the techniques covered during this workshop will be prepping face fabric and backing fabric using herringbone stitch. Discovering how to transfer a design using an invisible pen. Giving flow and interpretation to a design. Two ways of dying silk ribbon, one discussed and one practiced. Backing a hoop and making your embroidery into a Christmas ornament/decoration.
Stitches covered during this workshop will include, chain stitch and stem stitch using stranded thread. Ribbon stitch, Detached chain (lady daisy stitch), Twisted chain (optional) and French knots (optional) using silk ribbons.
During the day tutor, Jacqueline Schultz, will model each step of the project and you will also receive comprehensive instructions.
Materials in the kit for this workshop include a 4”/11cm hoop. Red, 100% silk dupion face fabric and light weight calico backing fabric. Natural 4mm silk ribbons for flowers and hand dyed 4mm silk ribbons for foliage. Stranded threads, various colours and seed beads, various colours, enough to complete this workshop project.
All specialist equipment will be provided for use at the workshop.
Each participant also receives a 10% off voucher to spend online.
Depending on your sewing speed and previous experience you should be able to take home your completed ornament/decoration.
